It is good to be back to San Jose after my south and North Carolina car trip, I do love SC. When dream of a new car, if you see one of tose balloons over my head to see what I’m fantasizing about, you might first see me plugging my cauto into the outlet in my garage. At first, I might be picturing the Chevy Volt, Chevrolet’s first plug-in hybrid auto that went on sale about a year ago. But that car might morph into the new Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid. My friend who owns a san jose auto repair service was telling me about this…All in all I do wonder what this will do to insurance and repair service prices?
The Prius Plug-in Hybrid is supposed to get about 87 miles per gallon in combined driving and 49 mpg in hybrid mode. The Volt gets about 93 mpg electric power or 37 mpg using gasoline power alone.
Both the Volt and the Prius auto Plug-in let drivers operate in electric mode solely if they limit trip distances to 15 miles and limit speed to 62 mph or less, but that’s less than half of Volt’s electric range of roughly 40 miles. But here’s one of the kickers. The Prius has space for people instead of four for the Volt, which has to make room for the batteries beneath the car that divides the passenger area.
Right now these cars are often bought by people who just love the concepts they represent. They are still too expensive to be considered a sensible buy.
But the concept is an idea whose time as officially arrived, with three great little cars to lead the way; the Nissan Leaf being the third player. The Leaf, by the way, is the only fully electric model being offered by one of the main auto builders.
Toyota has sold over a million Prius models in the U.S. since the first model came on the market in 2001.
A side note; Toyota doesn’t want us to talk about Priuses, it has said, but the plural of Prius is to be known as Prii – I guess like cacti, instead of cactuses. I don’t think this will catch on.
The Prius Plug-in will sell be made available in only certain states in the beginning. They will be offered in October through the Toyota’s website, and deliveries will begin in spring 2012. The car will be available nationally in 2013. My friend is getting some North Carolina insurance for his auto in Raleigh, NC and I wonder how all of this will affect the insurance prices overall, considering that the auto insurance area can be stormy at times.
The Prius Plug-in will be comparable to the performance of a standard Prius. In electric or EV mode, the system switches to full hybrid mode when it is triggered by full acceleration; this mode divides engine power between the drive wheels and the generator, and keeps the battery charged.
Looks like these cars are probably 5 years or so away from being a reality for me—I’m hoping by then there will be some used auto plug-ins I can afford. But I can still dream, can’t I?
